<0> man.. its not for dalnet
<0> i need for other things..
<1> I never tried oidentd
<0> it`s ****..
<0> every time i want to change the identd
<0> i must edit inetd.conf
<0> and restart it ?
<1> I hear it's easy
<0> /usr/local/sbin/oidentd -g nobody -u nobody
<0> this is cool
<0> :)
<2> /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname is what I edit to change the name of my machine, right?
<3> no
<2> How do I do it?
<3> only /ets/hostname
<2> ok

<2> what is the best debugger to use for X?
<4> sigh. any gentoo:ers here who has recently upgraded to modular X? cant get that fscking fixed font found.
<3> emerge xfs
<4> hm, i have.
<3> /etc/init.d/xfs start
<4> hm... might have to reemerge that one. complains about /usr/share/fonts/encoding ... cus its missing.
<4> but um i had it running yesterday. without luck
<4> but then i decided to remove all fonts from /usr/share/fonts cus um i dunno and re emerged like corefonts, freefonts, freetype and um some more stuff..
<5> run fc-cache?
<4> hm yeah. skips some fonts. and i apparently now dont have a "misc" folder where the "fixed" font should be. hmmmm..
<5> mkfontdir, mkfontscale, fc-cache
<4> hm wait. im getting something here. when im trying to emerge fonts-misc-misc i get: "bdtopcf: symbol lookup error: libXfont.so.1: undefined symbol: serverClient"
<3> emerge -s libxfont
<3> reemerge lib
<4> hold
<4> hm no luck
<5> fontsproto?
<4> hm i successfully emerged font-misc-misc now. with the above error though. or "warning" i should say seeing how it completes
<4> hm the fonts.dir in misc/ is just containing a "0" :/ and ive run fc-cache
<4> blah, im re-emerging the xorg-server and xorg-x11 and i hope it works when i get back :/
<3> smurfd :o)
<4> and getting ignored not /ignore, in #gentoo on freenode aint helping
<6> whats the prob?
<4> cant find the fscking "fixed" font in xorg 7 after upgrading from xorg 6.8
<6> oh
<4> and after fc-cache the fonts-cache-1 file is still empty in misc/ fonts folder
<4> nAah im out. later
<5> smurfd, remove the fontdir and fontscale
<5> in every fontsdir
<5> run mkfontdir and mkfontscale
<5> then run fc-cache
<4> k, gonna do that later. tnx.
<7> i had a similar problem when upgrading X
<7> i remember it has something to do with a changed directory structure.
<5> nah, i started X from 7.0 :)
<8> when i grow up, i want to be a fire truck
<9> dse
<10> it's des, not dse :P
<11> Back
<11> Hi All! :)
<10> hi datacable
<11> Why but why?
<12> hi,
<13> To see the MAC addresses of the NICs on your system, type ifconfig -a
<12> Anybody use xchat will spellchecking ?
<14> anybody use squid out there?? I want to try to use it to intercept all my customers port 80 requests then display their requested page in another page with an advertising banner on the top of it? Can this be done with squid??
<15> E W !
<15> do your customers know you're trying to do such a horrible thing?
<14> yeah, its for a hotel hotspot they want to offer free internet access but asked if they could place a banner on their pages somehow
<13> Sounds immoral.
<14> was thinking of redirecting them to a frames page and in one frame putting the banner then the other the requested url
<14> the hotel i'm doing the work for doesnt want to charge but wants to sell advertising space to local companies etc
<13> I would put up a web page for the hotel and sell advertising spots on the web site.
<15> WHOA!
<13> ?
<16> LINDA!

<16> <3 simmy
<14> that was one suggestion, other is perhaps a pop up that comes up when the user first connects but the hotel asked if its possible??
<15> Red_Cell : Bot check... How heavy is a 5kg weight?
<15> Bobq : There's premade solutions for that, already.
<14> what are they??
<13> Red_Cell: How's it going today?
<14> I just set up a chillispot router for them and now they are asking about advertising......what solutions you know about.....on the cheap!
<17> how can i tell if a NIC is in promiscuous mode? (without looking at the logs)
<16> p3nguin, he is opped in couple of channels, i dont think Red_Cell is a spam bot
<17> is there a way?
<13> Dino: I know he's not... hence my attempt at a greeting.
<16> oh ok :)
<18> going fine :) thanks
<18> what distro do u suggest for a router server?
<18> i'm dling FC5 atm
<15> something small with the fewest services as possible (takes less time to secure)
<19> Use one that you are familiar with.
<13> Red_Cell: I like Smoothwall for a firewall/router/NAT server.
<18> it has GUI too?
<13> Yes, it uses a web interface for your administration.
<18> ok, i guess the url is: http://www.smoothwall.org/
<18> ?
<13> that looks right.
<18> thanks :)
<18> i'm canceling my FC5 dl
<13> THey have a free version and a corporate version, depending on what your application is.
<13> Smoothwall is a 35M download. :)
<13> It's only 130M installed on disk.
<18> only 35M ? waw
<13> It's small, has good features, is easy to work with, and works.
<13> Red_Cell: Before you download the regular ISO, I need to mention something to you.
<13> They have patches called "fixes."
<13> They are up to fixes-8 right now.
<18> ok
<18> and?
<13> They have an ISO image that already has the fixes applied if you don't want to worry with applying them yourself.
<18> i got to dl the fixes too
<18> http://www.smoothwall.org/updates/2.0/fixes8.html\
<13> If you choose to apply the fixes yourself, you MUST download all the fixes and apply them one at a time, rebooting between each fix.
<18> ok, i have to choose ISO image, between v2.0 and v3.0 alpha version
<13> Grizzly (version 3) is not ready for production.
<18> ok. 2.0 then :)
<13> It's released, but it's not working completely.
<18> so this one, is already applied with fixes8 ?
<13> If you want the one with the fixes applied you'll have to look for it on sourceforge.net.
<13> It's not directly on smoothwall.org.
<13> If you can't find it I'll load up a browser and get it for you.
<18> sure :D if it's ok
<13> Keep in mind that Smoothwall is only your NAT firewall and router. You mentioned "router server" earlier. You'll have to run services on a LAN machine.
<18> yes
<14> simmy: do you have name or link to some prepackaged software that does what i'm looking for??
<20> hi ..whats an apps to hide folder on linux fc 4 ?
<13> PinieTheWooh: If you are talking about hiding a directory, you simply change the name of it and put a . on the front of the name.
<13> mv /home/rob/directory /home/rob/.directory
<13> That makes it hidden.
<13> Red_Cell: It's taking me a moment to find that for you.
<20> but ...
<20> i want something more gui
<18> it's ok :)
<13> Use your file browser, such as konqueror or nautilus.
<13> Red_Cell: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=114890&package_id=146726&release_id=380727
<13> smoothwall-2.0.with.fixes.1-8.iso
<20> ok following that procedure will hide the file but there are an option to show it...
<13> That is version 2 with fixes 1 thru 8 already applied.
<13> PinieTheWooh: So you want to reduce permissions on it rather than just hiding it?
<18> :) thanks
<20> yes i want to reduce permission so none can read it ..but system can access and write it
<13> Hiding it just keeps it out of site, it doesn't make it inaccessible.
<13> If you want to reduce permissions on it you'll need to use the `chmod' command for that.
<13> You can read the man page for full options for chmod.
<20> ok tux ..thanks
<13> For a simple way to secure a file, chmod 0400 /home/john/filename
<20> 400 ?
<13> That will secure filename so that only the owner of the file can read it and no one else can.
