<2> : There is no best. It's all about personal preference. For example, I like KDE and Wmaker. Others hate those. They might like gnome and E better. Or they might like icewm. Or they might like blackbox. It doesn't make one better than the other. I'd suggest trying out a few and sticking with the one you like the best.

<1> There are two reasons I would buy a Linux distribution. 1) I don't have a high-speed internet connection and don't have any friends that do, either. 2) I support my favorite distribution monetarily by paying for their products, i.e. a boxed set.
