<0> grub, lvm, gparted, etc
<1> Someone was in here the other night and called it "knoblix" because it allegedly "licks knob."
<0> probably does then
<1> I dunno why but it struck me as funny. Almost snarfed coffee on my keyboard.
<2> which is the best way to install grub?
<2> throw the installation disc?
<3> checking tk build dir... using tk library in /usr/lib
<3> ./configure: line 2972: /usr/lib/tkConfig.sh: No such file or directory
<3> anyone know what is prob ?
<4> i imagine you are missing what ever package tkconfig.sh belongs to.
<5> MrAnderson; is it true that if i'm running linux and run windows in a VM, there's almost no performance hit as opposed to actually booting up windows?
<0> well that depends on your vm
<4> ive done it. and its a pretty big hit.
<0> boch is 1/500 , qemu with accel is 1/2, vmware 1/2
<0> you do of course need the resources
<0> like if you would use 512 in real life on the OS you should have 512 for the vm

<4> vmware will only allow you to set aside cpu and ram iirc
<0> which is what ya need ya know
<0> cpu and ram
<4> so much i mean
<5> i dont follow
<0> well the so much is based on the real you have
<0> so if I want my vm to have 512mb of ram I need at least that much free wouldnt I?
<5> oh , well yea
<0> so my system only have 769mb of ram, so my vm only get 256mb
<0> when i have 2gig of ram real easy
<4> vmware was kind of a nightmare to set up for me os slackware
<0> well thats cause you have slack
<0> took me 5 min on fedora
<4> i got it working after tons or research.
<0> didnt require any research here
<0> just installed and worked
<0> but hey you use slack
<4> yeah well...lucky you.
<0> no luck about it
<0> i dont use slack
<4> ;)
<5> ok, so i got vmware, but i can't get my cd to boot
<0> RaZorro: i'm not holding your hand walking you through it
<0> its documented
<0> setup a vm with your /dev/cdrom or whatever device as your vms boot device
<4> what distro is he using
<5> myyyy bad, it defaulted to my virtual cdrom
<5> me?
<4> what distro you using raz.
<4> yeah
<5> well i got some free time so i figured i'd see if i can get gentoo workin
<4> ah
<5> yea
<5> i have ubuntu, mandriva and gentoo cds
<4> sys v or bsd style init
<5> i figured i'd start with the hardest before just quitting and going with ubuntu
<4> you know what kind of init style it uses
<5> you lost me
<5> hah
<4> slack was a pain for vmware because of its init style. think its just slack thouh
<4> brb
<5> oh
<0> That_Guy: thas what you get for using slack
<4> what do you have againt slack
<0> you just demonstrated what I have against it
<0> ;)
<4> ahhh cancel. the rpm guy. now i understand.
<4> oops
<0> welcome back
<4> damn pda.
<4> thanks
<0> deb rpm makes no diff to me if it works
<0> packages are your friend
<0> i turn all source to package
<4> yeah i use src2rpm evert once in a while
<4> i think i had to use it for privoxy...they dont like slack either
<0> its not hard to roll a package
<4> privoxy and vmware are the only two things i have really ever had a problem with
<6> I use privoxy on a daily basis :) Love the product
<0> never used it
<0> what is it

<4> im waiting for a version of linux for this pda im using. palm ****s for multi tasking
<0> That_Guy: palm 6 which you probabl wont see doesnt
<6> privoxy is an HTTP proxy
<0> i dont use proxy
<0> just nat
<4> i thought palm 6 was out already.
<0> no you use palm 5
<0> cobalt and granite
<4> i know i use palm 5. but i thought 6 was out...
<0> the sdk for 6 is out
<0> and its licensed to producers
<4> i just thought it wasent out for the tungsten c yet
<0> none of them have put out a cobalt device though
<4> ah
<0> its not on any commerciall available device
<4> i havent found any linux distro for my tungsten c yet either
<0> from what I hear palmsource is moving linux
<0> which is one reason why no one put out a 6 device
<0> thats just the palmdev scuttlebut
<4> id be happy with anything. as long as i coult multi task
<4> my im cleint runs in the backgroung...wich is nice
<4> but apparently they cant do that with irc
<4> battery is about to die. going to hop on the desktop
<4> brb
<0> i have a lifedrive
<0> would be neat to run linx on it but not unless it had all the apps I have now
<0> adn wifi has to work and drive mode has to work
<5> what free program do you recommend to format partitions?
<5> that i can run in windows

<10> i have a wireless usb 1.1 nic dongle. i put it into promiscuous/monitor mode and after 20-30 minutes my comp malfunctions in a strange way. the keyboard output becomes control characters briefly before it completely stops working. the only thing i can do after it 'freezes' is switch terminals (ctrl+alt+del doesnt even work; ps2 keyboard). in normal operation i don't see such problems. it is based on the prism3 chipset and i am using ...
<10> ... wlanng to control it. any clue what the problem might be? I think that it may be receiving to much data to transmit over usb 1.1 but thats just a theory i concocted... is that a possibility?
<11> 800K bandwidth
<11> yuck
<9> whois charlok_1
<9> whois charlok_16
<1> ChArLoK_16: try putting a / before your commands.
<12> fearphage, i don't think so..
<12> it looks like the driver has a problem, but it could be anything i think
<10> ok
<13> eh, hey there lacroix.
<9> yeah
<14> hey prez
<9> sorry
<13> Pleasure seeing you here. :)
<9> me?
<14> Pleasure is mine :)
<9> thx
<15> ChArLoK_16 : This ain't AOL! Learn to spell, kid!
<13> heh, sure. why not charlok. :P
<9> huh
<1> Isn't Charlock the name of the bad guy in the first Dragon Warrior video game?
<1> (Does anyone else remember those?)
<13> not I.
