<8> I guess what's bugging me is I like "shortcuts", that auto-connect and display back. I've found serveral free servers.. but I have to launch putty and tunnel X, start the app... and I've still got the putty window sitting there looking dumb the whole time

<9> right. what I just mentioned gets away from all that annoying crap. you set up the server once (slightly annoying at times, but only once), start the client, connect, you're done.

<9> natively supports encryption and compression as well, and has a nice caching system. it's the fastest way i've seen to get a gui going. gives you the whole desktop too not just one app. if you can't tell, i like it.
