<1> do you need to give a user root access?
<1> or are you try to add a user onto your system?

<2> is mine
<2> sorry
<2> i`m not god englisher
<3> so, this is a computer you built?
<2> i buy this from a friend
<2> no
<3> Is the computer there with you... or is it a host somewhere else
<2> it`s form host company
<2> it a host somewhere else
<3> so why don't you talk to their support?
<2> You will need to place the CGI Scripts that you want to run with your userid in the directory /home/alex/public_html/scgi-bin.
<1> do you mean that you need shell access to the computer?
<2> what means with your userid?
<2> what userid?

<4> ERROR: Unable to find the system utility `ld`; please make sure you have the
<4> package 'binutils' installed. If you do have binutils installed,
<4> then please check that `ld` is in your PATH.
<4> can someone tell me whats the problem here?
<4> i was trying to install new driver
<5> distro?
<4> kubuntu
<5> br0n: install build-essential
<4> what is that for?
<5> aptitude install build-essential
<5> for compiling
<4> is it the same with DCC?
<5> what's 'DCC' ?
<6> guys gotta ask something
<5> ok sharavanan
<6> i want to install the mplayer plugin in my mozzilaa
<6> i has 2 files
<7> There are instructions for that.
<6> install.rdf
<6> and a folder named chrome
<5> use the mozilla plugin installer, I think.
<4> sorry,in windows, the default folder for installation is 'program files', how bout linux?
<6> mozilla plugin installer ??
<7> Linux doesn't have a default directory for installation. It depends on several factors as to where things are installed. As long as the builder follows the FHS everything should be okay. You can read the man page for hier for help on what goes where.
<5> br0n: binaries are installed in /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/sbin, data files in /usr/share, /usr/local/share and libraries in /lib, /usr/lib, /usr/local/lib
<7> sharavanan: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#mplayer
<4> ic
<5> br0n: if you're using apt-get, the packages are installed under /usr (in the most cases)
<4> apt-get=need internet connection right?
<5> not neccesary, you can copy the files (.deb) in /var/cache/apt/archives
<5> or install it using dpkg -i
<5> repositories can be created using dpkg-scanpackages, please read the apt-howto (aptitude install apt-howto)
<4> i have some .deb files, all i gotta do is typing the dpkg -i command?
<4> should i cd to the directory first?
<5> dpkg -i FILE.deb, but you will need the deps
<7> That's probably not necessary. Just type in the path.
<5> dpkg -i /path/to/file.deb

<4> ic2
<4> dpkg -i /path/to/file.deb<--after this, everything is installed?
<5> after that, 'file' package is installed if the deps are installed
<5> you can use: dpkg -i /path/to/file.deb /path/to/dep1.deb /path/to/depn.deb
<5> but, first please read the apt-howto
<4> where can i get apt-howto?
<5> br0n: aptitude install apt-howto
<7> Results 1 - 10 of about 448,000 for apt-howto. (0.33 seconds)
<7> Google has the answer.
<5> and run apt-howto
<4> ic2,thanks
<8> http://www.****inggoogleit.com/
<7> ick two
<5> http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/
<4> does linux create 'my document' like windows?
<7> Nope.
<7> Linux is just a kernel, a base for the operating system.
<5> hehehe
<7> A kernel allows interaction between software and hardware.
<3> apparently it doesn't allow me to have 5.1 sound though
<7> You don't have the right software.
<7> If you have a GUI environment such as KDE you can easily create a "My Documents" which represents a directory elsewhere on the system.
<3> most likely... I've been all over the ubuntu forums :/
<7> Did you look to see if there is support for that in your kernel?
<4> r there more than one kernel? why?
<3> why wouldn't there be? Ubuntu pretty much turns everything on by default
<7> I didn't know that.
<5> first check if is supported by alsa, nivek
<7> br0n: There are several branches to the Linux kernel.
<3> Alsa sees the channel, gives me options like "duplicate front" etc
<4> thanks p3nguin,usuario, for your help
<3> speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6 cycles all the channels.. but I only get audio from front left and right
<5> nivek: what player are you using?
<3> tried several... amarok, xine etc
<9> Hello - I just bought a new computer that I was going to use as a dedicated linux server - What distro should I put on it? I was thinking Gentoo, but I've heard Fedora Core is pretty nice... It has to have "emerge" or some equivilent
<3> FC is not for servers.
<5> and you configure the device?
<9> what about Gentoo?
<11> gentoo
<5> imac1701: never use gentoo for servers
<11> why not ?
<3> usuario, I _believe_ so... that's where I'm looking for help
<9> why usuario? easy to exploit?
<12> how to set p***wd for the user that i add on root.
<3> "add on root"?
<1> imac1701: if you want an RH-like distro, try Centos
<7> Putting Fedora on a server is like running a RHEL4-Beta1 on the system.
<9> RH-Line ?
<5> nivek: in amarok: preferences -> engine (choose xine) -> device
<12> i add user on root. but how to set a user p***wd.
<1> we're moving to that where I work
<3> add user on root doesn't make any sense, swiftco-
<9> is Centos linux based and does it have "emerge" or something like it?
<1> it's the same packages that are in RHEL, just without the RH trademarks
<11> usuario so ? why not gentoo
<7> swiftco-: What the hell are you talking about adding on root? That doesn't make a bit of sense.
<1> *sigh* go to the website - www.centos.org
<1> no, it has yum
<5> for servers try with debian or slackware
<11> its a better 1000times than FC
<3> isn't slackware like... really out of date
<9> yeah
<7> Nope.
<9> I was using slackware.. Its too old now
<7> It's not.
<9> 2.4 kernel
<1> you don't need to rebuild the packages every time you install them
<1> that's kind of the point of a binary distro
<9> slackware doesn't have emerge. I love emerge.
<7> It has a 2.6 kernel, just like everyone else.
<11> 11 rc4 is on the run
<7> I've used Slackware for years.
<5> ok, please check the security issues for each distro
